Role Description

We are seeking a full time Junior Materials Engineer (m/f/x) to develop new biopolymer compounds to meet the demand for high environmental performance materials for manufacturing. This is a pivotal role in a fast-growing company working at the intersection of material science and carbon capture.

Company Overview

Made of Air is a climate-focused materials company transforming waste biomass into high-value, carbon negative, thermoplastic materials for industrial use.

Made of Air’s materials replace fossil plastics in manufactured products. Composed of carbon sequestered from the atmosphere, the materials permanently remove CO2 and are thermoformed by standard industrial processes to meet millions of building and consumer product applications. Storing carbon in products enables manufactured goods to become an engineered carbon sink.

Made of Air is an award winning start up that pushes the boundaries of materials and production, helping to build economies that actively reverse climate change. This is a high-growth, dynamic environment with a diverse and highly motivated team of innovators, scientists, and business visionaries.

Our mission is to provide carbon negative materials to enact and inspire urgent, scale reversal of the climate crisis.

How you’ll make a difference:

As a junior materials engineer (m/f/x), you will be part of a team investigating and exploring new technological areas for our carbon negative materials.

In this position, you will be responsible for designing and carrying out experiments in research projects that aim to improve the environmental footprint and technical properties of our products.

What you will be doing:

  • Carry out experimental research into materials capable of carbon utilization
  • Develop methods to test and validate key material parameters in collaboration with the research team
  • Carry out proof of concept testing in a diverse range of scientific disciplines including: polymer chemistry, materials science, composites, biomimetic materials, colloid chemistry etc.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operation of a laboratory environment
  • Analyze and present results based on systematic data collection to teams of different scientific backgrounds
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of materials (DSC, Mechanical testing, IR-Spectroscopy, etc.)

We’re looking for:

  • Experience of performing materials research in a laboratory environment
  • Experience in the use of analytical methods, specifically hands-on knowledge regarding the operation and maintenance of material characterization methods
  • A proactive and innovative spirit, stress-resilience, and diverse thinking
  • A drive to participate in an urgent climate mission
  • A knowledge of good scientific practices, including documentation procedures and how to ensure reproducibility
  • BSc, Master’s degree or PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science or equivalent experience
  • Experience in polymer composites, ideally with biomaterials, fillers, and natural fibres both at lab and commercial scale
  • A familiarity with risk assessment procedures, and experience in the safe handling of potentially hazardous chemical
  • The ability to think creatively in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary and fast-moving research landscape

If you do not have all of the qualifications listed above, we encourage you to apply anyway and tell us why your personal experience makes you an excellent candidate.

We’re offering:

  • An ambitious team with a shared passion for the climate. You will work in a transparent, fast-growing, and inspirational environment in which you are able to innovate and be challenged on a daily basis.
  • Integration into a highly creative and interdisciplinary environment, with opportunities for financial and operations career development.
  • The chance to be a pivotal member of a groundbreaking company.
  • 28 paid days off on a full-time basis
  • A permanent contract and a short probationary period of 3 months
  • Mission-driven work that enacts the urgent reversal of climate change.

Our Values:

  • Put People and Planet First
  • Create Tangible Impact
  • Build Trust through Transparency
